Built by the renowned Consolidated Commuter Company in Silver Bay, New York, Mohican is one of the few surviving express commuters from the glamorous Great Gatsby era of the 1920s and 1930s, when the rich and famous traveled between Manhattan and their Long Island summer residences by fast, elegant boats.
Sailing enthusiasts, including Harold Vanderbilt, also used such commuters to follow their racing yachts comfortably from a deck chair.
Few of these masterpieces of nautical design - fast yet luxurious - have survived over the decades, and Mohican stands as one of the finest examples. Measuring 19.85 meters (66 feet) in length, with accommodation for six guests, a spacious and comfortable salon, and retaining most of her original details, Mohican has spent many years cruising the Mediterranean.

Another breathtaking trip over the Pentecost holidays in May 2026 showed both Mohican‘s attractiveness, as also her outstanding appearance, along “La Cote d‘Azur“:
With one of my daughters, her boyfriend, the skipper Luca Berio und me as the owner on board, we left Porto Maurizio/Imperia, Friday, May 22 at mid-day, after shopping for the wonderful Italian foods and wines, and fueling. Passing the „Costa dei Fiori“, the most beautiful part of Liguria, with San Remo and Ventimiglia, we soon had Menton and Monte Carlo in front of us, preparing for the Formula 1 Race in two weeks.
Having other things in mind, we passed Monaco, Eze and Beaulieu-sur-Mer, approaching the famous Cap Ferrat. Cruising just below the impressive lighthouse, we turned into the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer, one of our preferred destinations on the whole coast. No wonder, writers, composers, tourists, retired people and even the Rolling Stones were always attracted by this wonderful place! Only 3 hours and twenty minutes since departure in Imperia, we set out our bathing ladder to enjoy the first bath in the Mediterranian sea this year.
Drinks and snacks, dinner on board and a fantastic sunset over the village closed the first day.
The next day, Saturday, gave us an nice breakfast and a calm sea, bright sunshine, with almost no wind. After a morning swim, we took off for Cannes, passing the entire skyline of Nice, aiming at the Cap d‘Antibes. Of course numerous super yachts, all clean, shiny and stylish were anchoring on the way. What a privilege, however, we thought, to be on a unique classic boat, with its own history, soul and timeless beauty!
After less than 2 hours, traveling comfortably at 11 kts/h, we reached our destination: The „Isles de Lerin“, just in front of the city of Cannes, which was still busy with the film festival. Settling in on the channel between the two islands, we found a nice anchoring place in the midst of a whole herd of day boats, enjoying the beautiful day on the water. After many people had stopping by, taking photos of Mohican, or even asking about her U.S. decendence, the fleet of small boats mostly disappeared after the sun-set. Again, we enjoyed a beautiful evening almost alone, with just a few other yachts staying over for the night, all in respectful distance to our old lady.
Starting Sunday with a morning swim, a well matured melon, Italian „Prochutto Crudo“, and „Mozzarella di Bufalla“, and some pasta for lunch, we lifted the anchor and found our way through the hundreds of day boats, having returned from the day before, to sail back to Nice. In the late afternoon, we left my family members in the old harbour of Nice since they flew back to Berlin that evening.
With Skipper Luca Berio and myself left on board, we returned to Villefranche-sur-Mer for the night, and back to Imperia the following day. Only four days away, the trip seemed like having been a long vacation. And Mohican seemed to enjoy being able to leave its harbor and be our comfortable, reliable companion for a wonderful time!
And, for the record: For the entire trip we used less than 400 litres of Diesel.
